Product Information

Our Unique Blend... Every day the British public drink more than 8 million Fairtrade hot drinks. Today, 99 tea is a hall mark for quality and value for money. It is a household name with a world wide reputation, yet it came about almost by accident. The name 99 wasn't a marketing brainwave. It was the factory blend number. In the early 1900's, when 99 Tea first appeared it was known as Prescription Tea. Tea drinking was highly fashionable and supported by the medical profession. Every packet carried the approval of some eminent physician and claimed to be a remedy for headaches, loss of memory, sleepiness and scurvy, to name a few. In the late 1930's these advertising claims went out of fashion. 'Prescription' was no longer an appropriate name so a new one was introduced. At the time the Co-operative Wholesale Society blended and packaged tea to order. Each region of the country had its own blend to suit the local water. The 99 blend happened to be Prescription Tea. From then on it became known as Co-op 99 grew in stature to become our top selling brand. The leaves used in the 99 Tea are from estates in East Africa, India and other tea producing areas. The East African teas give the blend the distinctive reddish colour with good strength and rich flavour. The Indian teas have a more robust quality to compliment and balance the 99 blend, giving an overall smooth taste.
